2010 Charity Canoe Race - August 14th 2010

logo_medium.jpgOn Saturday, August 14th 2010, the Massapequa Fire Department will be hosting the 16th Annual Emergency Services Canoe Challenge. The race consists of a two mile course to the Great South Bay, beginning and ending in John Burns Park in Massapequa. If you have the courage to compete, if you have the desire to dig deep, if you can paddle through the pain with some of the bravest, boldest, finest and fiercest, you will receive a complementary race day tee shirt and free refreshments after the race – and have a great time doing it!

This year’s beneficiary will be the PENDERGAST FUND.   The Heather Pendergast Fund has been established in memory of Heather Pendergast.  Its purpose is to assist the children of volunteer firefighters on Long Island who have been stricken with a life threatening illness.Heather is the daughter of Penny and Ex-Chief Thomas Pendergast of the Massapequa Fire Department.  At a young age, Heather was diagnosed with Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome (SDS),a rare disease which mainly involves the pancreas, bone marrow and skeleton.  She was then later diagnosed with cancer.  Her courageous long battle was lost October 30,2008.
