2008 Charity Canoe Race - Kyle and Matthew’s Race

On Saturday, August 9th 2008, the Massapequa Fire Department will be hosting the 14th Annual Emergency Services Canoe Challenge. The race consists of a two mile course to the Great South Bay, beginning and ending in John Burns Park in Massapequa. If you have the courage to compete, if you have the desire to dig deep, if you can paddle through the pain with some of the bravest, boldest, finest and fiercest, you will receive a complementary race day tee shirt and free refreshments after the race – and have a great time doing it!

We will have 6 divisions. Each division will have 1st , 2nd and 3rd place medals for Men, Women and Mixed categories:
FD Fire Department - includes Ambulance companies and Fire Police
PO Peace Officer - includes Sheriffs, Constables and Police
PF Physical Fitness - includes Martial Arts, Fitness Clubs and Gyms
SC Social Clubs - includes PTA, Katie Daly’s and K of C
CO Corporate – includes all corporate sponsored competitors
SD Senior Division – Sum of the ages of the 2 competitors is 90 years or better

The first place finishers of the above divisions are eligible to compete in the Grand Champion race. It seems that Herr’s Super Deli, who predicted a dynasty, is on their way to having that prediction become a reality as they are defending Grand Champion for 3 years running.

With the help and support of all of you, this yearly contest has become a summer event that is circled on everyone’s calendar! Bring your friends and family and enjoy a Day at the Races! Hot dogs, hamburgers and liquid refreshments will be served. Everything only costs a buck!

This year, we are raising funds for the families of Kyle Davey, a 1 year old Massapequa boy battling Cystic Fibrosis, and Matthew Bove’ a 3 year old Huntington boy fighting Hepatoblastoma.
Matthew Has a website on www.carepage.com once you register (it’s free), his site is godblessmatthew. You can then read his story from the first day of his liver operation in Boston Hospital to date.

The entrance fee is $100.00 per two-person canoe.

We are raising the bar with our raffles. This year, we are raffling off a 2008 Harley Davidson Road King Classic. We will only sell 300 tickets and they go for $100 each so hurry and contact Tom or Pat before they sell out.

Complementary continental breakfast for all competitors will be served at 8AM. The race starts at 9:30 and will be over at approximately 2PM. Come and enjoy a day in the outdoors and root for your favorite team to at least stay dry!

On Saturday, August 11th 2007, the Massapequa Fire Department will be hosting the 13th Annual Emergency Services Canoe Challenge. The race consists of a two mile course to the Great South Bay, beginning and ending in John Burns Park in Massapequa. With the help and support of all of you, this yearly contest has become a summer event that is circled on everyone’s calendar! If last year’s race was any indication of how much fun can be had by two people in or out of a canoe, then you really have to experience it for yourself. Bring your friends and family and enjoy a Day at the Races! Hot dogs, hamburgers and liquid refreshments will be served. Everything only costs a buck!

This year, we are raising funds for the families of Cory Mendoza, a 10 year old Ronkonkoma boy suffering from hypoxic ischemic Encepholopathy as a result of a near drowning incident, and Michael DiNunzio a 15 year old Massapequa boy fighting Biphenotypic Leukemia.

YOU MADE A DIFFERENCE!
Thank you from Pat Byrnes, Tom McCarthy and the entire Canoe4Kids Team!
